Surrey County Cricket Club and the Surrey Cricket Foundation are proud to launch a new video resource as part of the Surrey Junior Cricket Championship Values and Behaviours Framework.

The Surrey Junior Cricket Championship (SJCC) was formed in 2019, merging a number of juniors leagues from around the county to form a single structure to support junior cricket. Since its creation, the SJCC has experienced significant growth, boasting a 37% increase in teams and a 32% rise in player participation since 2021, reaching 18,660 junior players in 2024. As part of the league’s development a Values and Behaviours Framework has been established in order to drive a positive culture across all junior cricket within the county. This seeks to reinforce the fantastic behaviours we witness across the majority of cricket across the county, as well as enabling us to challenge behaviours that go against our values.

Over the past 2 years a number of resources have been developed which aim to illustrate how everyone involved in the game can bring the SJCC Values of Spirit, Inclusion and Enjoyment to life. The messages for coaches & team managers, players, parents & spectators and club committees are all adapted to outline how their behaviours can contribute to driving a positive culture within the game.

‘Don’t Be THAT Parent at the Cricket’ aims to encourage parents to reflect on how their own behaviours might impact the experience of their children within the game by placing the parent in the child’s shoes after getting ‘out’ in a game.

Assistant Director of Cricket Participation, Simon Hards, said, ‘We wanted to create a video that would provoke parents to reflect on their own behaviours at the cricket and are really pleased with the result. We hope that this video will be used as a resource that can be shared throughout the club network to get parents thinking about how their own actions might sometimes not align with our values of spirit, inclusion and enjoyment, and hope that the video supports further adoption of the framework in Surrey in the coming years.’
