At the Surrey Cricket Foundation, we believe that cricket is for everyone, and our S9 programme is designed to provide accessible and exciting opportunities for players with a range of disabilities to experience the joy of the game.
Whether you’re new to cricket or looking to develop your skills, our S9 programme offers a supportive and engaging environment where you can learn, compete, and make new friends.
What is S9 Cricket?
S9 Cricket is a dynamic and inclusive softball cricket format specifically designed for players with disabilities. It’s often played in a pairs format, focusing on participation, skill development, and enjoyment. S9 serves as a fantastic entry point into competitive disability cricket and a key pathway to the D40 hardball competitions for those who wish to progress.
Our S9 programme aligns with the ECB’s (England and Wales Cricket Board) disability pathway, ensuring a consistent and structured approach to player development.
Why Play S9 Cricket with Surrey Cricket Foundation?
- Inclusive Environment: We pride ourselves on creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere where every player feels valued and can thrive.
- Skill Development: Our qualified coaches focus on developing fundamental cricket skills – batting, bowling, fielding, and teamwork – in a fun and engaging way.
- Competitive Opportunities: Take part in S9 Regional festivals and matches, representing Surrey and competing against other counties in the South East.
- Pathway to Progression: S9 cricket is a vital step on the disability cricket pathway, offering opportunities to progress to D40 hardball cricket and beyond for those who aspire to more advanced competition.
- Social Connection: Beyond the cricket, our programme fosters a strong sense of community, allowing players to build friendships and enjoy the camaraderie of being part of a team.
- Lord’s Taverners Super 1s: Many of our S9 players start their journey through our partnership with Lord’s Taverners Super 1s hubs, offering free, accessible softball sessions for young people with disabilities.
Get Involved with S9 Cricket in Surrey!
We’re always looking for new players to join our growing S9 cricket community. Here’s how you can get involved:
- Attend a Super 1s Hub: Our Super 1s hubs are a fantastic starting point for young people aged 9-25 with a range of disabilities including neurodiversity. These free softball sessions are a great way to learn the basics, have fun, and see if cricket is for you. Contact us for details of your nearest hub.
- Join our Representative S9 Team: If you have some cricket experience and are looking for competitive opportunities, our Surrey S9 team competes in regional festivals throughout the season. These events are a chance to test your skills, represent your county, and experience exciting matchplay.
- Express Your Interest: Even if you’re not sure which pathway is right for you, we encourage you to get in touch! Our dedicated team can discuss your interests and abilities to find the perfect cricketing opportunity.
Player Classification
For players wishing to compete in S9 Regional competitions or higher-level formats like D40 Pursuit or D40 Quest, a classification assessment may be required. This ensures fair and equitable competition. Our team can guide you through this process. Please note, for S9 Challenge events (more informal, local games), classification is not required.
