The Surrey Cricket Foundation (SCF) played a key role in a successful new initiative in July, keeping children aged 9 – 11 years old from across London active through the London Loop activity programme.

The programme, a collaboration between the four London counties, aimed to combat limited physical activity in disadvantaged areas of the capital.

SCF joined forces with Essex, Kent and Middlesex County Cricket Boards to deliver a range of exciting activities across three days at the end of July. The programme offered more than just cricket, with a variety of sporting and non-sporting options available. Catering to a wider range of interests and abilities ensured that children had the opportunity to try cricket, alongside water sports, art, basketball, football, BMX biking and other activities. The activities all proved to be a big hit with the children, with many trying something new for the first time, whilst forging friendships in a safe and inclusive environment.

The days were made even more special for the participants, with special guest visits from legendary bowlers Courtney Walsh and Angus Fraser, along with a visit from East-End local Ravi Bopara. The three days culminated in a mini-Olympics, a bespoke set of children’s athletics events such as Speed Bounce, Nerf Javelin, Chest Push and a number of track events, it was all to play for!

Feedback from parents was overwhelmingly positive, with many noting their thanks for the experience:

“My son had a great time. A bit thank you to Surrey for a wonderful opportunity for our young people and to the rest of the staff for their care and support.”

“He has never been excited to leave the house like he’s done these past 3 days. Thank you for giving them the opportunity to explore and have fun. A big thank you to all supporting staff. Thank you for helping them create memories.

“We are really grateful for the opportunity you offered to our children. It was an unforgettable experience.”

The success of the London Loop programme paves the way for future collaborations and initiatives aimed at promoting physical activity and engagement among young people in London. The Surrey Cricket Foundation is committed to continuing to play a key role in these efforts, providing opportunities for children to discover the joy of sport and develop important life skills.
