The Surrey Cricket Foundation (SCF) recently partnered with the Brixton-based Loughborough Community Centre at Max Roach to deliver an inspiring and educational set of activities for children during the October half-term, timed to coincide with Black History Month.
This initiative is the latest development in a thriving relationship between the Foundation and the community centre, which began with regular on-site Dynamos cricket delivery. The SCF not only provided additional funding but also leveraged wider relationships to create unique opportunities for the children.
A highlight of the week was a trip to the Black Cultural Archives (BCA), located in Brixton. The Foundation arranged for the children to attend a special Windrush-themed workshop.
To tie into the Foundation’s mission, the workshop was thoughtfully integrated with a cricket theme. Children learned about notable figures with a link to cricket, including the legendary Learie Constantine. Constantine not only played 18 tests for the West Indies but was also integral to the Race Relations Act in the UK, as a result of his efforts for racial equality and justice.
The activities culminated with a special visit from former West Indies and England cricket star, Devon Malcolm.
Devon was given a tour of the centre, finding the vibrant community in full-flow. He then participated in a Q&A session, where children from the community were able to ask Devon questions about his early life and playing career. It was clear to see that the children, along with their parents, were truly inspired by Devon’s words.
As part of the ongoing partnership, the Foundation also delivered two hours of cricket to the children during the half-term camp. Regular Dynamos sessions are held at the Max Roach centre, which boasts excellent on-site facilities including its own astro-turf pitch.
The Surrey Cricket Foundation is committed to continuing its relationship with the Loughborough Community Centre at Max Roach through ongoing delivery and support.
