Surrey Cricket Foundation (SCF) Code of Conduct for Cricketers in Pan-Disability and VI Teams
This Code of Conduct outlines the expected standards of behaviour for all participants, including players, officials, coaches, and volunteers, in Pan-Disability and Visually Impaired Cricket. It is designed to ensure that the game is played with fairness, respect, and integrity, while promoting a positive, inclusive, and safe environment for everyone, regardless of ability level.
- General Principles
1.1 Spirit of Cricket: All participants must uphold the Spirit of Cricket, recognizing that it is a game that owes much of its appeal to the fact that it should be played not only according to the Laws, but also within the Spirit of the Game. This is particularly important in the context of disability cricket, where adaptations and understanding are key.
1.2 Respect:
- Show respect for all individuals, including teammates, opponents, umpires, officials, volunteers, and spectators.
- Recognize and appreciate the diverse abilities and challenges of all participants.
- Avoid any language or actions that could be perceived as discriminatory, offensive, or ableist.
- Respect individual communication needs and preferences (e.g., verbal, non-verbal, sign language, tactile).
1.3 Integrity: Act with honesty and integrity in all aspects of the game, both on and off the field.
1.4 Fair Play:
- Compete fairly, adhering to the Laws of Cricket and any adaptations specific to Pan-Disability or VI cricket.
- Avoid any form of cheating or gamesmanship.
- Ensure that all participants have a fair opportunity to participate and compete.
1.5 Inclusion:
- Promote an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome, valued, and respected.
- Be mindful of the diverse needs of players with different disabilities and make reasonable adjustments to facilitate their participation.
- Challenge and address any discriminatory behaviour or language.
1.6 Safety and Well-being:
- Prioritize the safety and well-being of all participants.
- Be aware of any potential risks associated with specific disabilities and take appropriate precautions.
- Ensure that all participants have access to necessary support and assistance.
- Player Conduct
2.1 On-Field Behaviour:
- Accept the umpire’s decision without dissent, understanding that umpires may need to make quick decisions with adapted rules.
- Communicate respectfully with umpires, seeking clarification on rules or adaptations when needed.
- Refrain from using offensive language or gestures.
- Treat opponents and teammates with courtesy, patience, and understanding.
- Avoid any conduct that could be construed as intimidating or threatening, considering the potential impact on individuals with disabilities.
- Do not engage in any form of violence or physical assault.
- Respect the condition of the pitch and the ground, and any adapted equipment.
- Behave in a sportsmanlike manner, both in victory and defeat.
- Support and encourage teammates, recognizing that individual performance may vary.
- Captains are responsible for the conduct of their team and ensuring that the Spirit of Cricket is upheld, with a focus on inclusion and fair play.
2.2 Off-Field Behaviour:
- Attend matches and training sessions punctually and prepared, recognizing that some players may require additional time for preparation or travel.
- Notify the captain or team manager in advance if unable to attend, understanding that communication needs may vary.
- Respect venue facilities, equipment, and any adapted equipment.
- Participate in social events in a responsible and respectful manner.

- U18 players must not consume alcohol at training, matches and events and no consumption of alcohol before or during matches and training for adult players and coaches.
- Do not bring SCF or the VI squad into disrepute as a result of your behaviour away from cricket.
- Conduct of Captains
In addition to the responsibilities outlined in Section 2, Captains shall:
3.1 Lead by example, both on and off the field, upholding the highest standards of conduct, with a focus on inclusion, respect for diversity, and fair play.
3.2 Ensure that their team is aware of and adheres to this Code of Conduct, including any disability-specific considerations.
3.3 Promote a positive, supportive, and inclusive team environment where all players feel valued and able to contribute.
3.4 Manage their team effectively, making fair and considered decisions that consider the diverse abilities and needs of players.
3.5 Communicate effectively with umpires and officials, seeking clarification on rules and adaptations as needed.
3.6 Address any breaches of this Code of Conduct within their team with sensitivity and understanding.
3.7 Be proactive in creating a welcoming environment for new players with disabilities.
- Conduct of Officials, Coaches, and Volunteers
4.1 Role Model Behaviour: Officials, coaches, and volunteers shall act as role models, demonstrating the highest standards of conduct and promoting the values of inclusion, respect, and fair play.
4.2 Fairness and Impartiality:
- Officials (e.g., umpires, scorers) must perform their duties with fairness, impartiality, and to the best of their ability, demonstrating an understanding of the specific rules and adaptations of Pan-Disability and VI cricket.
- Coaches must provide instruction and guidance in a fair and equitable manner, tailored to the individual needs and abilities of each player.
4.3 Respect and Support:
- Treat all participants with courtesy, patience, and understanding.
- Recognize and value the contributions of all volunteers.
4.4 Safeguarding: Adhere to SCF’s safeguarding policies and procedures, with additional consideration given to the specific needs and vulnerabilities of individuals with disabilities.
4.5 Training and Awareness: Officials, coaches, and volunteers should seek out training and information to better understand the needs of players with disabilities, including communication, mobility, and specific requirements related to their impairment.
- Breaches of the Code of Conduct
5.1 Any breach of this Code of Conduct may be subject to disciplinary action.
5.2 The Surrey Cricket Foundation will investigate alleged breaches and determine the appropriate course of action.
5.3 Disciplinary action may include:
- Verbal or written warning
- Match suspension
- Expulsion from the squad
5.4 The severity of the disciplinary action will depend on the nature and severity of the breach, any previous breaches of this Code, and the specific circumstances of the individuals involved.
- Amendments to the Code of Conduct
6.1 This Code of Conduct may be amended by the Surrey Cricket Foundation from time to time.
6.2 Players will be notified of any amendments, and the updated Code will be made available through appropriate channels, ensuring accessibility for all participants.
- Acceptance of the Code of Conduct
7.1 All members, players, officials, coaches, and volunteers, upon joining the squad, or commencing their involvement, are deemed to have accepted and agreed to abide by this Code of Conduct.
