West Wimbledon CC, formerly the Bank of England Cricket Club, is embarking on a new chapter with a renewed focus on inclusivity and community. After facing significant challenges in recent years, including the loss of their main playing site, the club has secured a permanent home at Beverley Meads in Wimbledon and is rebranding as West Wimbledon CC.
A key pillar of this revitalisation is the introduction of a Women’s team in 2025. This marks a significant milestone for the club, which boasts a rich 116-year history but has never before offered dedicated cricket opportunities for women.
Leading this exciting initiative is Emma Green, a testament to the club’s evolving journey. Emma’s connection to the club runs deep. She first picked up a bat for the team at the age of nine, following in the footsteps of her dad and brother, both of whom play for the club and serve on the committee. As the club’s first-ever female junior player, Emma experienced firsthand the challenges of navigating a predominantly male environment. She played alongside boys’ teams before progressing through the Surrey County Cricket Club girls’ pathway, fostering a deep love for the game.
Now, Emma returns to West Wimbledon CC as a recently qualified Level 2 coach, ready to inspire the next generation of female cricketers. “Growing up, I watched my dad and brother play at the club,” shares Emma. “It’s incredibly rewarding to now be preparing to coach the next generation of players, especially within the new Women’s section. I understand the unique challenges and opportunities that women and girls face in cricket, and I’m passionate about creating a welcoming and supportive environment where they can thrive.”
Emma’s coaching journey has been further enriched by her experience on her Core Coach course, facilitated by female Coach Developer Cara Biggins. “Cara’s insights, drawn from her own experiences in club cricket and her understanding of female athletes’ specific needs, provided me with invaluable knowledge and inspiration” she explains.
Emma’s leadership will be instrumental in the success of the Women’s team at West Wimbledon CC. The team is set to debut in three tournaments in 2025, marking the beginning of a new era for women’s cricket at the club.
