The season has barely got going but Surrey’s seniors are already in the honours
Collecting trophies is becoming a habit for the Surrey over-60s.
They won the Seniors County Championship in 2023 – echoing the efforts of Rory Burns’s side – and, with core of the same side, have just wrapped up the 2024 Vase.
The final had been due to be contested against Somerset last September but was washed out, so Surrey headed back to the west country recently to secure a nine-wicket victory at Taunton Vale.
Restricting the hosts to 192-9 from 45 overs was key to their success, Peter Fielding (4-36) and Andrew Pickering (3-38) the pick of the bowlers.
Getting the reply off to a ferocious start, Sanjay Beri and Chris Evans took 30 off the first three overs and their opening stand of 117 effectively put the matter beyond doubt.
Beri’s 59 from 33 balls augmented an unbeaten 98 from Evans, who plays for England over-70s, guiding his side home with 14.3 overs to spare.
Skipper Mark Shepherd is now targeting a hat-trick of silverware over the coming months and commented: “I was pleased to see everyone performing close to their full potential so early in the season and look forward to this level continuing through the year,”
