The annual event took place at the newly refurbished Guildford Cricket Club.
On Tuesday 22nd May, we welcomed girls from schools around Surrey to our annual Women and Girls Day at Guildford Cricket Club.
The weather was on our side as various primary schools arrived for their morning of cricket. Throughout the morning the girls learnt new skills as they rotated around the circuit of the basics of bowling, big hitting and fielding. The improvement throughout the morning was very noticeable with some players never having played cricket before.
The Cricket Factory was very popular, with the girls having to not only be accurate with their throwing and catching, but also very fast as they competed with each other. The girls ended their morning by putting the skills they had learnt from the circuits to use, in games of pairs cricket and pass the bat. After some very exciting and close games they then got a chance to meet some of the Surrey Stars players, where they were able to ask some questions about life as a professional cricketer.
Shortly after the primary schools left, we were greeted by secondary schools from across the county. They too enjoyed a circuit of high catching, boundary stop, boundary hitting and bowling. We saw some very quick times in the Cricket Factory’s Catching Maze Challenge with a record of 8.09 seconds! As confidence grew throughout the afternoon a huge amount of potential was exposed in the circuits, leaving everyone very excited for the games at the end of the day. Cranmore Cricket and Pass the Bat featured as our games, both fast-paced and inclusive with an impressive number of runs scored and some outstanding fielding. As the secondary schools prepared to leave they got a glimpse of the Surrey and Middlesex players preparing for their game in the evening. It was a brilliant day for all involved and we hope that the girls continue to enjoy their cricket within their home environments.
