We welcomed over 170 to the first event of its kind!
We welcomed over 170 girls to our first U14 Starburst Festival.
St George’s Weybridge kindly hosted us for the day and we were treated with 5 beautifully cut squares. This set the standard for the day as the group stages began. The bowling was particularly impressive and it was nice to see so many girls giving it a try. The girls were quick in the field and very willing to take catches, it was encouraging to see so much urgency in the field.
Each team played at least two group games followed by another before the semi-finals. The improvement throughout the day was very noticeable with running between the wickets really standing out, resulting in the scores each game increasing. The luxury of the SMASH IT format is that when you’re out you lose five runs but continue batting; This was brilliant for the girls as they were able to learn from mistakes quickly and develop. The girls seemed to really enjoy the competitive spirit the games were played in, whilst still having a lot of fun. It was great to see those with more cricketing experience helping those who hadn’t played as much cricket, the girls created a very supportive environment for each other, and that must be commended.
The teams that won their group were placed in the semi-final. We had Kent College vs George Abbot and The Charter vs St George’s College. The standard of cricket in both semi-final’s was very impressive. Kent College and The Charter were victorious taking them on to the final. Kent College’s bowling and fielding performance was outstanding, making victory look very likely. The Charter played persistently and competitively in response, however, this was not enough to stop the force that was Kent College. Congratulations to Kent College on winning the trophy and a huge well done to all those who competed and enjoyed a day of cricket in the sun!
