Winner of the David Edwards Officiating award 2017.
As part of a new series of articles in which we look at the achievements of every winner of a 2017 Outstanding Services to Cricket Award, we introduce Howard Cohen.
Howard was named the 2017 winner of the David Edwards Officiating Award for his work as an umpire across several Surrey leagues for almost 40 years.
This award is given to officials who raise the profile of good officiating within the county, display enthusiasm when recruiting new officials and build rapport with players to create a positive image of the modern cricket official.
Howard has been an umpire for nearly 40 years, standing at County 2nd XI, Minor County, Premier League and MCC matches. He currently is a Surrey Championship Umpire but also stands in other leagues and competitions within and outside of Surrey. He has happily stood in recent years with new umpires offering assistance in their development.
He also serves as County and Regional Education Officer for the Surrey Association of Cricket Officials and ECB Association of Cricket Officials in which he coordinates training of new match officials.
He has worked tirelessly to promote new ideas about the way umpires and scorers are trained and supported, and is a great servant of the game. He has also coached many young players and the Surrey Association of Cricket Officials believe is worthy of consideration for this award.
Congratulations, Howard!
