Female cricket captains from around Surrey, joined recently retired England star Lydia Greenway for a tactical awareness session.
On Tuesday 4th October, eleven female cricket captains from across Surrey travelled to George Abbot for a very different training session, led by recently retired England Cricketer Lydia Greenway. With six different clubs attending the evenings activities, the pressure was on to deliver a night of knowledge and tactical insights from an international stage to support the female game in the county.
The evening started with an interesting topic – what makes a good captain? – which as you can imagine created a buzz around the room with all discussing various captains across the sporting world. Numerous names were mentioned and characteristics were given of what made them stand out from the rest.
The evening continued to run smoothly as clubs started to mingle discussing various experiences that have occurred during the year, which enabled Lydia to draw out on situations that have happened within the dressing room and helped the others in the room to relate. This exercise was based around picking a situation that may have happened where it challenged you as a captain, how you reacted and whether you would react the same way if it were to happen again. This went down well as it gave the ladies a chance to share their experiences.
The evening then moved onto the tactical portion of the activities with each working group given the chance to set a field based on the bowling style that was given to them. This proved A great activity for inexperienced players to learn from those around them but also to see how each captain had a different view point on setting fields for different bowling styles. Lydia gave a great demonstration of what to look for from the batter when setting a field and how small things can have a big impact on where you place your fielders. This rounded the evening off perfectly and all that attended seemed content with the knowledge they took away from the session.
A huge thanks to all that attended and especially to Lydia for continuing to enthuse and inspire female cricketers.
