Two excellent events to end the year!
This week saw the final primary school competitions of the year taking place, with the Year 5 Kwik Cricket finals being held at Sunbury CC on Wednesday, and the Connellan Trophy hardball finals taking place the following day at St Georges College in Weybridge.
The Year 5 competition saw 16 schools from around the county come together to compete to become county champions. Congratulations to the following schools for winning through their borough competitions and advancing to the finals day:
Lovelace (Kingston), West Byfleet (Woking), Send (Guildford), Rowledge (Waverley), St Charles Borromeo (Elmbridge), Cheam Park Farm (Sutton), Wallace Fields (Epsom & Ewell), Winterbourne (Croydon), Bishop Gilpin (Merton), Ravenscote (Surrey Heath), The Greville (Mole Valley), Holland (Tandridge), Langshott (Reigate & Banstead), Belleville (Wandsworth), Chennestone (Spelthorne), Springfield (Spelthorne)
After a fantastic days cricket the results were as follows:
Trophy: Winners - Belleville, Runners Up - Winterbourne
Plate: Winners - Chennestone, Runners Up - Lovelace
Shield: Winners - The Greville, Runners Up - Wallace Fields
The following day saw 6 schools (Winterbourne - Croydon, Westbourne - Sutton, The Raleigh - Mole Valley, Pyrford - Woking, Wonersh & Shamley Green - Waverley, Poplar - Merton) compete in the Connellan Trophy 7 a side hardball competition held at St Georges College. Again some excellent cricket was on show, with excellent bowling, catching, and in particular wicket keeping throughout the day. Following some hard fought cricket, Winterbourne faced Westbourne in the final, a repeat of the days first game. Batting first Westbourne scored an imposing 103 from their 10 overs, but in reply Winterbourne were up with the rate until a brilliant wicket maiden from Samar pegged them back, as they fell just short of chasing the target. A fantastic days cricket and all players can be proud of the exemplary way they played and behaved.
A great way to end a competitive season which saw over 6000 participants from over 600 teams taking part. The Foundation would like to thank all schools who entered, all venues for being gracious hosts, the teachers for giving up their time to take their students to these events, and last of all, all of the volunteers who have scored, umpired, organised and arranged to ensure these competitions take place. 2018 has been great season - bring on 2019!
