BCEW National League Fixture - Surrey v Kent
On Sunday 22nd August Surrey VICC hosted Kent at Frimley Phoenix CC, the last national League game of the year. Tom Barton (high partial), captain of Kent, won the toss electing to field first.
So, with Surrey batting first we were all rearing to go for a 1:00 pm start.
Surrey, opened with the promising partnership of captain Lois Turner (mid partial) and Dave Lewis (mid partial) which was alas cut short after Kent keeper Jack Peters (mid partial) caught Dave who only managed to score 5 runs. Mo Ahmed (total) was caught again by Jack, only scoring 2 runs. At this point the game was look decidedly in Kents favour when Dave Allen (Mid Partial) joined Lois on the field. The two created an impressive partnership bringing Surrey’s score up to 55-2 off 10 overs. The work however wasn’t over yet and significant runs were needed if surrey wanted to maintain a solid lead. The run rate continued to grow steadily with Dave earning his 50 before being caught for 55 by Matthew Boulding (high partial). The collapse of Lois’s wicket had also occurred when she was bowled by Tom for 33 runs. The wickets of Conna Jeffs (mid partial) and Leanne Harvey (low partial) followed. Things were looking bleak when Scott Harvey (low partial) then joined the game going on to score 22 runs and even hitting his first 4 for the club. When Scott was eventually caught by Tom, Surrey had a decent score on the board. The final wickets however fell very quickly with Jason Hobbs (mid partial) making his sterling debut, scoring his first run, not out. Surrey finished off at 170 all out off 33 overs.
Kent fought back with Lee Robshaw and Luke Boulding to open. The scored some very quick runs before the first wicket fell to Conna, who then went on to take the wicket of Amin Afstan (total) which was caught by Dave Allen. The wicket of the opening batsman was taken by Jason, taking his first wicket for the club. The next two wickets to fall were bowled by Lois. Meaning that at the halfway mark Kent were 92 for 5. Dave Allen then took the wicket of Kent’s keeper, caught by Mo. Lois and Dave took the final wickets respectively with Kent batter Maurice Williams (low partial) remaining not out. Other notable bowling moments credited to Scott and Josh Brennard (total) who, although not taking any wickets, went for very little runs with no extras given. All in all, a fantastic effort from surrey who fought on and kept the score low in the field even with a relatively low total to defend.
Many thanks to both captains for skippering for a good, spirited game and to the umpires, Simon Clark and Ross Sadler, the scorers, Steve Hardwidge and Simon Boulding and finally to Frimley Phoenix and Black water & Hawley leisure centre for the use of their ground. Next up the BCEW regional league T20 on the 5th September at Ottershaw CC against Dorset Dolphins.
