Over 30 female cricketers travel to Sutton Cricket Club’s Homefield Close ground to be part of International style training session on fielding, led by recently retired England star Lydia Greenway.
On Wednesday 24th August, female cricketers from across Surrey travelled to host club Sutton CC for a very different training session, led by recently retired England Cricketer Lydia Greenway. With over 30 women representing seven different clubs attending the evenings activities, the pressure was on to deliver a night to remember for years to come.
This session was going to be slightly more technical and match specific than the session Lydia delivered to the younger girls earlier in the week, but the ladies were very much up to the challenge. The ladies enjoyed a fast paced warm-up to kick start their reactions and agility ready for the forthcoming exercises. Once the warm-up had been completed, the ladies split off into groups to take part in a number of different technical stations from partner work to chase & retrieve, plus learning new ways to receive the ball when at the stumps. Lydia went round all the stations imparting knowledge and relating the excercises to match scenarios, which enabled the group to strike up conversations and ask tactical questions.
The evening continued to run smoothly as clubs started to mingle discussing various experiences that have occurred during the year, which enabled Lydia to create a final whole team exercise based on similar situations at a number of clubs. This exercise was based around players working together to cut off the ball in the innner circle before reaching the boundary or fielders saving two – along with making sure that all players were moving into positions where they could get a potential run-out whilst others backed up to prevent overthrows. This went down really well and the ladies feedback at the end of the session was brilliant.
A huge thanks to all that attended and especially to Lydia for continuing to enthuse and inspire female cricketers.
