Lydia Greenway inspires over 20 young female cricketers in Surrey with her enthused fielding masterpiece!
On Monday 22nd August, girls from Pyrford and neighboring clubs, welcomed recently retired England Cricketer Lydia Greenway to lead a very special session. With over 20 girls attending a one-off masterclass from a fielding superstar, they were all keen to get started!
After a short introduction, the girls got straight into having fun within their warm-up and the fun definitely didn’t stop there. Once the warm-up had taken place which Lydia described as 'the perfect way to get ready for fielding brilliance' – the girls broke off into small groups to take part in a fielding circuit where their skills would be put to the test. Activities involved high catching on the boundary, sharp slip catching and perfecting the participants throws for a run-out, to name a few. The girls were hanging off Lydia’s every word when giving out her top tips. Once the girls aged between 10-15 years, had completed their activity circuit it was competition time.
The competition was going to put not only the skills they had picked up that afternoon, but also their competitive spirit to the test. It involved reacting to a dropped ball as quickly as possible before throwing to their team-mate at the stumps, the aim to be faster than the other teams. Not only did it bring out the participants competitive nature, but you could tell the teams that really wanted to come out on top, as they ended up being the team that could shout 'HOWZAT' the loudest! At the end of the competition with girls cricket finishing as the winner, everyone popped inside the clubhouse where numerous questions were fired at the England legend, which she answered in great fashion.
All in all it was a fabulous afternoon in the sun, with girls going home with smiles on their faces and the next generation of England Women cricketers being inspired for life!
